570 Years of Blueprints, Navigating the 21st Century — The Legacy of Manjidang

Just as every great vessel requires a precise blueprint, every great leader needs an unshakable ‘Code.’ My ancestor Manjidang Kim Jun’s teachings from the 1450s—the 9 Chijam (9 Prohibitions) and Gyejaseo (Admonition to Children)—are more than just family mottos to me. They serve as my ‘Mental Ballast Water’ in the turbulent oceans of the global market and my ‘North Star’ when the fog of uncertainty sets in.

Part 1. 9 Chijam: The 9 Codes of Integrity for a Leader

Business is proven by numbers, but a leader is defined by a sense of ‘shame’ regarding one’s shortcomings. The 9 Chijam asks me:

  1. Geopolitical Trust (不忠): Are you loyal to your calling and the national values you represent?
  2. The Root of Excellence (不孝): How can a leader who forgets their roots navigate a future course?
  3. Teamwork and Fraternity (無兄無弟): A captain who does not respect partners and colleagues will only find isolation.
  4. Internal Management (家不先齊): Without order within one’s own organization and home, market trust remains out of reach.
  5. Strategic Networking (損友無益): Failing to build meaningful partnerships is a dereliction of a leader’s duty.
  6. Client Hospitality (待賓以薄): The door of opportunity does not open for those who treat their partners with lack of generosity.
  7. Transparency in Speech (言不忠信): No contract holds weight if there is no integrity in one’s words.
  8. Conflict & Risk Management (事多是非): Wasting energy on futile disputes is a sign of poor navigation.
  9. Self-Vigilance (未嘗自戒): A leader who fails to caution themselves will eventually sink in regret.

Part 2. Gyejaseo: The Unceasing Engine of Self-Correction

A ship’s engine drifts the moment it stops. My ancestor’s ‘Gyejaseo’ commands me to equip the engine of ‘Bulsik-Jagang (불식자강)’—strengthening oneself without rest.

“Never let the book out of your hand (手不釋券), broaden your horizons (造極業廣), and strengthen yourself without ceasing (不息自强).”

This sentence has become the core value of THE VESSEL CODE:

Sustainable Growth: ‘Strengthening oneself without ceasing’ is the essence of a leader, preceding even the pursuit of profit.

Data & Learning: Only those who never stop ‘reading’ (studying data and knowledge) can interpret the shifts in the global supply chain.

Temperance & Discipline: Distancing oneself from excess (liquor and distractions) is the key to making the clearest decisions with a sharp mind.
